The short version
"Adaptogen" is a specific idea that has been stretched into a marketing buzzword. It was coined by Soviet scientists in the mid-twentieth century to describe a substance that helps the body resist a wide range of stresses, is broadly non-toxic, and nudges the system back toward balance rather than in one fixed direction. Where the word comes from
The term was introduced in 1947 by the Soviet toxicologist Nikolai Lazarev and developed by his colleague Israel Brekhman, who were looking for substances that could help soldiers, workers and athletes withstand stress without the crash of a stimulant. They set out formal criteria: an adaptogen should raise non-specific resistance to varied stressors, be essentially harmless in normal doses, and have a normalising action — pulling an over-active or under-active system back toward the middle rather than simply pushing in one direction. That last criterion is what separates the concept from a plain stimulant.
How they are thought to work
The leading explanation centres on the stress-response system — the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, or HPA, axis, which governs cortisol. Adaptogens are proposed to modulate this axis and related stress signalling so the body's reaction to a stressor is less extreme and recovers faster. It is a plausible, partly evidenced mechanism rather than a fully mapped one. Importantly, "modulate the stress response" is a modest, believable claim; it is a long way from the cure-all language these herbs are often sold with.

What the human evidence actually shows
The evidence is uneven across the group. Ashwagandha has the most human data, with several trials reporting reduced perceived stress and lower morning cortisol in stressed adults. Rhodiola has some studies on fatigue and mental performance under stress. Maca is used traditionally for stamina and has small trials on sexual desire. For many other herbs wearing the adaptogen label, the human evidence is thin or preclinical. So the sensible reading is that a few adaptogens have real, if modest, support — and that the category as a whole is broader than the proof. Reading the label like a sceptic
Because "adaptogen" is unregulated as a marketing word, treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee. Look for a named herb you can check — ashwagandha, rhodiola, maca — at a dose in the range that studies actually used, rather than a proprietary "adaptogen blend" that hides the amounts.
